Doosan Machine Tools has made their way from their humble beginnings as a small store, to a global leader of the machinery industry. They were founded in 1896 in Seoul, Korea as a retail and cosmetics store, and slowly grew through acquisitions after the Korean War, developing into a multinational conglomerate with emphasis on consumer goods, manufacturing and construction sectors.
In 1967, the Doosan Machine Tool Division was established to produce cutting machines, metal drilling machines and other related products. They first entered the US market in 1996, and has since grown to distributing machine tools all over the world.
Over the next few decades, they made lots of progress and has been continuously developing. In 1976, Doosan completed the construction of the machine tools factory, then reached the 1,00 milestone in machine tools production in 1979. Doosan also successfully developed the NC (Numerical Control) lathe (PUMA 10) independently. The following year, they began exporting NC machine tools.
From there, the company initiated the production of NC machining centers and exceeded the 3,000 marks in machine tools production which won them the Quality Control award in 1983. In just 2 years, the company hit its 5,000 marks in machine tools production, and because of the machines’ good performance, it received the Parent Management Award.
Just a few years later in 1990, the company reached the 10,000 landmark in machine tools production. It also obtained the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 certification in 1993. The next year, they established Daewoo Machinery Corp., a U.S subsidiary, exporting CNC Lathe manufacturing technology to China. In the same year, it surpassed the KRW 100 billion milestones in annual machine tools sales along with the Korean National Quality Award.
Within the following 2 decades again it had more rewards and produced lots of products and machine tools. In the year 2000, it exported machine tools technology to China (Nantong). The same year it hit the 50,000 marks in cumulative shipments of machine tools. The next year, its CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) lathe was chosen as one of the global top-tier products (Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy). It also exported CNC lathe manufacturing technology to China and surpassed the KRW 100 billion milestones in annual machine tools sales. Continuously through the years, it did not stop to achieve more rewards and milestones for the company.
Doosan was selected as a model conglomerate in exports in 2002 and established a local subsidiary in Yantai, China, beginning the construction of a machine tools manufacturing plant the following year. Doosan was then renamed “Doosan Infracore”, later integrating with Doosan Mecatec Machine Tools BG and achieved 1 trillion in consolidated sales. The company then established the largest R&D center in Korea in 2008. The following year, they gained recognition as its Vertical Machining Center DNM series was chosen as one of Korea’s proud technologies by the National Academy of Engineering in Korea.
In 2010 it’s High-speed, high-rigidity, multi-axis NC (Numerical Control) lathe was selected as one of Korea’s top 100 technologies of the year. It didn’t stop soaring high and achieving the biggest order amount & sales in the BG’s history and successfully held the 8th DIMF (Doosan International Machine tools Fair), a total of 65 units were exhibited in 2011. In the following years, it made more noise and gained more awards. In the year 2013, it completed the construction of the Seongju factory. It expanded its large machine tools manufacturing capacity. It’s PUMA SMX series won the Red Dot Design Award in the main competition (2014). It’s FM/5AX series also won the Red Dot Design Award in the main competition in 2015. And in May 2016 it was renamed again from Doosan Infracore (2005) to Doosan Machine Tools Co., Ltd.
